From the Archives: a Peoria Fourth

I was an intern, and it was the strangest of summers. Uncertainty ahead. Between houses. States. Not quite knowing I was about to pack my red Jeep and drive across the Continental Divide.

Photographs like these make me feel humid, you can smell the fried food of summer fairs and are deafened by the locus.

This summer’s reign was overtaken very recently. I can almost mark the date on the calender. The first clue, dry leaves crunching under my fingers from a lingering tree. The windows open. Jackets and hoodies at the coffeeshop in morning shade. Clues blaringly obvious as I lie in waiting, ready to pounce and scream “Autumn!”

Kentucky mosque denied for 150 Somalis

The Mayfield Board of Zoning and Adjustment denied 150 Somali refugees a conditional use permit to continue praying in a building along East Broadway in Mayfield, Kentucky.
The permit was denied over concerns about parking availability in the area. Business owners expressed concern that the Muslim worshipers would use their client’s spaces during prayer time.
The Somali representative was sent away from the City Hall meeting because the conference room had met capacity. When the board later realized he had been sent away, a police officer was sent to find him. The police officer was not able to find the mosque representative, and no representative was on-site during the meeting or voting.
Regardless of the concerns of parking, Christian t-shirts and talk of Islam and Christianity filled the City Hall. “The Christians won this time,” a woman said as she left the building.

New Cameras

Here are a couple of new toys I’ve recently come across. The Land Camera was a gift from a friend who was cleaning out his closet. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that after a battery change I can get it going. The Lomo I’m super excited about too. Emilee let me open my birthday present early! (Over a month early.)
